We take a look.

German Shepherd

Protection is second nature to a German Shepherd. Originally bred as a herding dog, the breed has since been used in many other types of work, including disability assistance, search and rescue, police work and warfare. Their strength as well as intelligence makes them perfect for the security industry and dog handlin.

Did you know? Gabi the German Shepherd was a guard dog in the 1980s at Belgrade Zoo. He protected a security guard and the public by fighting with an escaped jaguar.

Dobermann

Dobermanns are known to be intelligent, alert, and tenaciously loyal companions and fierce guard dogs. The breed has been ranked amongst the most intelligent dog breeds in both experimental studies and expert evaluations. In its past, the Dobermann had to be intimidating and able to defend its owner from attackers, however through careful breeding over the years, the breed has become much more good-natured, easy to train, extremely loyal and exceptional for dog handling.

Did you know?  Cappy, a Dobermann saved the lives of 250 US Marines when he alerted them to Japanese soldiers in 1944.

Beagles

Beagles are adept at sniffing out contraband, weapons and drugs. With their inconspicuous looks and friendly demeanour, they can pass unnoticed in busy areas. Their small size is perfect for moving around small areas that would be hard for larger breeds.

Did you know? Their long ears catch scent particles and draw them close to the dog’s nose, so they can take in as much information as possible from their surroundings..

Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers are easy to train, efficient and obedient making them perfect for dog handling. Widely considered the most popular breed in the world, the Retriever is perfect for search and rescue, explosive and drug detection and arson.

Did you know? Labrador, Sadie was awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in military conflict. She detected explosive devices, which were subsequently disarmed while serving in Afghanistan.

Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois makes for an excellent security dog. First used in World War I as a Red Cross Dog, the breed is similar to a German Shepherd. Slightly smaller in stature but no less intelligent, they are also the perfect breed for detection, guarding, search and rescue, as well as being the perfect companion dogs.

Did you know? Mali, a British Army Malinois was awarded the Dickin Medal in 2017 after completing a mission whilst injured during the War in Afghanistan
